Valuable Mirror of Truth #18: The Cost of Idolatry
Read: Exodus 20:3, Psalm 115:4–8, Proverbs 3:5-6, Matthew 6:33
“Happy New Year!”
When many of us think about “Idols,” we may think about images and statues of animals and other things that are sometimes made out of gold or silver. But an “Idol” can be anything that takes precedence in your life, over God’s place in your life.
There are several things in life, that can potentially be regarded as an idol. For instance, money and the need to “keep up with the Joneses,” the prestigious career, and the now insatiable desire to keep advancing; the social media, that you may spend countless hours engaged in, to keep up with the world’s current trends and customs. And let’s not forget gaming…the love and addiction that comes from constant devotion to scoring points and advancing higher levels in each game, and that relationship that keeps taking precedence, in place of your relationship with God. It’s all a form of Idolatry.
So, what is the Cost of Idolatry?
The Cost is that all the time, money, and energy that you’ve invested in all of these things, can potentially leave you feeling unfulfilled. Why? Because the only way to fully enjoy your life, career and relationships, is when you prioritize your relationship with Jesus Christ first. When you trust in God, and acknowledge Him in all your ways, He will lead and guide you in the direction that He has ordered for your life, thus granting you the stability and fulfillment that you need. (Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV)
Please understand, you can have things in this life that you love, but please make sure that you don’t love these things, more than you love God. The 1st Commandment says, “Thou shalt have no other gods (idols) before me.” (Exodus 20:3 KJV)
Brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors, by taking inventory of our lives and re-examining our priorities, we can then make sure that nothing we do, will take more precedence in our lives, other than establishing, nurturing and maintaining the healthiest and most loving relationship, with the only wise and loving God.
“..casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (1 Peter 5:7 KJV)
In conclusion, God wants you to know that the Cost of Idolatry is far too expensive, because of how far away from Him you will become. God cares for you and wants you to have total fulfillment in Him. Start today to work diligently at putting God first and purge those things out of your life that don’t support the joy that you can experience in God, both now and forever.
